Tax Code Y Explained

What does this code mean?

The Y suffix is for people born before 6 April 1938 who may be entitled to a higher Personal Allowance (if they had this allowance before 2016 and were grandfathered in). The higher allowance reduces tax on a lower income. This code is increasingly rare as it applies to a very elderly demographic.

Who gets this code?

UK taxpayers born before 6 April 1938 who previously qualified for the age-related Personal Allowance.
